Before Thought ·
Student Exhibition · 5th Buddhist Art Program, Mae Fah Luang University
Central Chiangrai Art Gallery · Chiang Rai
Before Thought is a painting exhibition by the fifth cohort of the short-term Buddhist Art Program at Mae Fah Luang University, academic year 2025, presented under the group INNER Ground. The exhibition forms part of the students’ learning process, bringing Buddhist art studies into practice through mindfulness, contemplation of the Dharma, and an engagement with the uncertainties of life.
The exhibition invites viewers to “pause” and become aware of what is before them, before the mind begins to interpret. Here, Before Thought is not a form of theoretical knowledge, but a state of awareness that arises before thought—gradually settling into the body, mind, and actions of each artist. Each painting becomes a trace of contemplation: some are quiet, some are dynamic, some are clear, and others remain ambiguous, reflecting the states and experiences encountered by the artists throughout their creative process.

This series begins with images of flowers arranged in vases—flowers that do not exist in nature, but are created from the artist’s memories, imagination, and creative process. The vase represents a defined space, where every element is carefully arranged and controlled in terms of position, form, and balance. The resulting beauty emerges from this deliberate arrangement, reflecting how humans seek to define and organize nature within the frameworks of perception and meaning they create.

The work begins with an image of a field of flowers from memory, once remembered as a scene of beauty. Yet, on closer observation, the natural world in the image is not as intact as it was remembered. Many flowers have withered, fallen apart, or been damaged by changing surroundings, while some remain, adapt, and endure. These flowers become symbols of survival, adaptation, and the small hope that continues to grow amid uncertainty.
